Pass Interception

A2 passes the ball to A1.
a - B2 deflects the pass and it is easily picked up by B1,
b - B2 tips the pass and B1 cuts in front of A1 to intercept or
c - B2 deflects the pass and B1 gains control of the ball after a scramble with A1.

To earn a steal, the defensive player should be the initiator of the action causing the turnover, not just the benefactor. The steal should be a take-away, not just a recovery and not just an unforced error.

The eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System (external link) includes a whole chapter referring the capacity of stealing a ball forcing an opponent error.

According to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System (external link) record the following:

In all cases, charge A2 with an unforced turnover.

In (a), credit B2 with a forced steal.

In (b), credit B1 with a forced steal.

In (c), the statistician will have to decide who played the most important part in the steal. If the deflection was not great and B1 had to struggle, then B1 should receive credit.

If the deflection was significant, then credit B2.

If there is doubt, credit the forced steal to the player who made the initial deflection, in this case B2.
