030308 ~ RPI calculation

RPI is a calculation used to compare teams to one another based on both a team's record and the record of their opponents. Since no teams ever play the exact same schedule, it can help determine relative success based on opponents; two teams with the same record can have very different RPIs. Teams with opponents with weaker records have lower RPI while teams with stronger opponents will have a higher RPI.

To calculate RPI the numbers are based on three statistics: team winning percentage (25%), opponents' winning percentage (50%), and opponents' opponents' winning percentage.

Rarely is it mentioned in NBA circles because all teams play each other and most of the time people have fairly similar schedules, but in a season like this one - where there is such a drastic difference between East and West - this statistic should get a little more play.

One component that goes along with measuring RPI is the Strength of Schedule stat (SOS). This calculates the overall winning percentages of a team's opponents. The stronger this number is, the more complementary it will be a team's own winning percentage and the stronger the RPI.
