Case Study
Category: Basketball Assists
Event: Pass after Defensive Rebound
Documentation: eBA System (external link)

Spanish ~ Español: Pase después del Rebote Defensivo
Code: AS04

Design:

After taking a rebound off the defensive board, A1 passes quickly to A2 at the division ( i.e., mid-court ) line and:

(a) A2 is open but passes to A3, who scores an uncontested layup;
(b) A2 is open but passes back to A1, who had broken to the basket immediately after the first pass and receives A2’s pass to score the uncontested layup;
(c) A2 is covered and passes to A3, who scores an uncontested layup; or
(d) A2 is covered, passes to A3, who returns the ball to A2, who then scores having lost his defensive man after the pass to A3.

Conclusion:

Commentary=
An assist should be more than a routine pass that just happens to be followed by a field goal, but the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System (external link) is very flexible in this area. It should be a conscious effort to find the open player or to help a player work free.

There should not be a limit on the number of dribbles by the receiver. It is not even necessary that the assist be given on the last pass.

The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System (external link) may record more than one assist in the same play.

There is no restraint on the distance or type of shot made, for these are not the crucial factors in determining whether an assist should be credited: nevertheless, we record the different types of assists depending on the distance and the type of shot made !

eBA Basketball (external link) Statistics Tracking=

In (c), credit A2 with a short or lane assist for a layup.
In (d), credit A3 with an assist give-and-go for a -type of shot-.
